Overthinking Fatherhood

Posted on June 27, 2006

I'm compelled to write about an article refenced by Jim Grisanzio, found in Time Magazine: Does Fatherhood Make You Happy?. If you don't feel like reading my diatribe, here's the punchline: Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert is the author of Stumbling on Happiness... is a clod. There are certain questions that are worded such that the answer is presumed. This is one of those. Merely asking the question makes me uneasy. Of ...

Ruby Shines in Linux Journal

Posted on June 26, 2006

I gave up on the Linux Journal some time ago. Technical content was low, ads were overshadowing the content, and I just didn't see it as being worth the $5. Instead I prefered Linux Magazine which had better technical content, was more well rounded, and provided a lot more value per mag. But LJ has worked hard to claw back it seems, by doing a better job of centering the content (creating a subject flow throughout each issue) and even ...

Business 2 Point WTF?

Posted on June 26, 2006

10 People Who Don't Matter. This little crock of crap that is B2.0's idea of journalistic insite is frankly sickening. Its always been a shitty rag, I doubt anyone would defend it, but their lists as of late just really point out how massively short sighted and niave they are. Perhaps a merger between B2.0 and The Register is in order, then they'll get both tech and biz wrong together. Some of Business 2.0's People Who Don't Matter: ...

Photo Catchup: JavaOne, OpenSolaris, PostgreSQL

Posted on June 26, 2006

I've gotten way behind on posting pictures. I finally caught up to date and figured, even as late as it is, I'd share some of them... OpenSolaris@JavaOne The registration area of JavaOne (above). All the signage was in XML tags which I thought was kool. Some of the crowds at JavaOne. The place was packed! The OpenSolaris booth on the JavaOne Expo Floor before the flood gates opened. Mike Kupfer mans the post ready and waiting. ...

Google Page Rankings

Posted on June 20, 2006

I've been in one of those "whats the point" ruts. At some point so much piles up on the TODO list that you spend more time manageing that list than taking things off it. When the work grows unpropotional to appreciation at some point you hit that "no one cares, whats the point" rut, that I'm in now. Sometimes Google can provide some comfort, so I thought I'd do a quick check of some of my page rankings. Here's what I found. Google ...

This Thursday evening, in Santa Clara, the OpenSolaris Users Group will host a presentation by Josh Berkus, PostgreSQL Core Team Member and closest thing PostgreSQL has to "the man"(tm). PostgreSQL is an amazing database and is now integrated into Solaris, the meeting should be an excellent one. I'm also pleased to report that some how Alan has put together a call-in number for the meeting! If you want to call in and listen to the ...

Battlefield 2: Armored Fury

Posted on June 19, 2006

I recently got bummed out that Battlefield 2, my relaxation tool of choice, has become a bit boring. Its gotten harder and harder to find large matches that are fun and exciting. My preference is for flying Blackhawk choppers on large 64 player maps, namely my favorite map FuShe Pass. The servers lately have had fewer and fewer player, the maps that do have players tend to be ground assult maps that I think are massively boring, such as ...

Seriously, check it out: Hewlett-Packard is adapting fans from radio-controlled jets to relieve heat-stressed computer servers. I'd personally suggest buying a better server.
