Amazon’s Downward Spiral

Posted on July 28, 2006

Whats up at Amazon? The Washington Post takes a look. I think these desprate lurches are going to just speed up the decline. I'm not sure why Amazon is so confused about what needs to happen... frankly its pretty simply to me: Amazon should be the online store. Its got the reputation but not the selection to prove it. If you want Books, CD's or DVD Amazon works alright but if you look for other things you may find a pretty horrible ...

OpenDarwin RIP

Posted on July 26, 2006

I know this doesn't apply to me, really, but I was sad to hear about OpenDarwin closing its doors. The site currently lists 3 Core Team members and 143 developers. The stated reason was summarized thusly: "OpenDarwin has become a mere hosting facility for Mac OS X related projects. The original notions of developing the Mac OS X and Darwin sources has not panned out." I think this is really sad. OpenDarwin was something I always ...

3 weeks and I'm still holding fast to my Time Management plan. Its like a diet program in some senses, most of the information is common sense, the real trick is to understand how everything fits together, what it really means, and then to light a fire under your butt to keep you on the path. So far I've got 3 weeks and I'm still with the program. I mentioned before that I switched from my PDA (OpenZaurus) to a Franklin Covey PAA, and I'm ...

California is know as a sunny and warm place, but "warm" isn't as correct as "temporate". Its almost always "just right"(tm) and we love it. Temps in the Bay Area this weekend have reached up into the 100's, something we usually only see in the inland parts of the state that aren't effected by the cooling forces of the Pacific breeze. Friday night Tamarah and I were so desprate to get away from the heat that we took a drive out to Half Moon ...

Friday Diversions: Kool Videos

Posted on July 7, 2006

I don't know what it is about this short 3 day week, but it feels like each day has had an additional hour inserted. If your dragging too, here are some fun, interesting, or kool videos to check out: Apple Newton Getting Started Video: Really kool for any Newton owner. I still have and love mine, and frankly some of these tips were new to me! A fun trip down PDA history lane. WRC 2006 Monte Carlo, Shakedown: Some comparative clips ...

Simon Phipps on Open Source: Redux

Posted on July 7, 2006

I was recently highly critical of Simon Phipps, in particular, his talk given at the Open Source Business Confrence. A long list of persons reacted strongly to the reports of his talk, all based on 3 reports of the event, most of which were horribly limited in scope. In fairness to Simon, I was perhaps more critical than I should have been in my responce, due in large part to major frustration and anger I had the day I wrote it about ...

As posted earlier, I was extremely offended and dismayed by the recent 10 people who don't matter expose in Business 2.0. As it turns out, I wasn't the only one offended in this house... my wife, Tamarah, was infuriated by the list as well. So much so that she mailed the editor, Owen Thomas. A lengthy and spirited exchanged followed, which I won't post in entirety given that it was a private exchange, but I found the following ultimate ...

Overthinking Fatherhood

Posted on June 27, 2006

I'm compelled to write about an article refenced by Jim Grisanzio, found in Time Magazine: Does Fatherhood Make You Happy?. If you don't feel like reading my diatribe, here's the punchline: Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert is the author of Stumbling on Happiness... is a clod. There are certain questions that are worded such that the answer is presumed. This is one of those. Merely asking the question makes me uneasy. Of ...

Business 2 Point WTF?

Posted on June 26, 2006

10 People Who Don't Matter. This little crock of crap that is B2.0's idea of journalistic insite is frankly sickening. Its always been a shitty rag, I doubt anyone would defend it, but their lists as of late just really point out how massively short sighted and niave they are. Perhaps a merger between B2.0 and The Register is in order, then they'll get both tech and biz wrong together. Some of Business 2.0's People Who Don't Matter: ...

Google Page Rankings

Posted on June 20, 2006

I've been in one of those "whats the point" ruts. At some point so much piles up on the TODO list that you spend more time manageing that list than taking things off it. When the work grows unpropotional to appreciation at some point you hit that "no one cares, whats the point" rut, that I'm in now. Sometimes Google can provide some comfort, so I thought I'd do a quick check of some of my page rankings. Here's what I found. Google ...
