Sun Ray Software 4 Update 1 Early Access

Posted on July 27, 2006

Sun is providing early access to Sun Ray Software 4 Update 1 - Early Access Release. On a sad note, its only available for Linux (RHEL and SUSE). Based on the notices it would appear that most if not all the improvements for Update 1 are specifically for Linux and thus why Solaris isn't included in the EA release. Just a reminder for those of you as forgetful as I am, "Sun Ray Software 4" is in fact (currently) Sun Ray Server Software ...

OpenDarwin RIP

Posted on July 26, 2006

I know this doesn't apply to me, really, but I was sad to hear about OpenDarwin closing its doors. The site currently lists 3 Core Team members and 143 developers. The stated reason was summarized thusly: "OpenDarwin has become a mere hosting facility for Mac OS X related projects. The original notions of developing the Mac OS X and Darwin sources has not panned out." I think this is really sad. OpenDarwin was something I always ...

O’Reilly Rounds Out the Ruby Series: Ruby Cookbook

Posted on July 26, 2006

A book I'm glad to see, Ruby Cookbook has hit the shelves. This really helps to round out the print coverage for Ruby. I bought Ruby in a Nutshell a while back and always keep it in my bag just in case. Of course, the Pragmatic Programmer's books still set the standard, but its nice to see Ruby grow in its acceptance according to the publishing companies. On a related note, O'Rielly's Ruby on Rails book is currently available ...

Time Management and Organizing Your Life

Posted on July 26, 2006

3 weeks and I'm still holding fast to my Time Management plan. Its like a diet program in some senses, most of the information is common sense, the real trick is to understand how everything fits together, what it really means, and then to light a fire under your butt to keep you on the path. So far I've got 3 weeks and I'm still with the program. I mentioned before that I switched from my PDA (OpenZaurus) to a Franklin Covey PAA, and I'm ...

Solaris Internals and Solaris Performance Tools Shippped!

Posted on July 26, 2006

Finally finally, the second edition of Solaris Internals has shipped. Last night at the Silicon Valley OpenSolaris Users Group we had a presentation on Xen by Sun Fellow Tim Marsland which ruled. And as a very very special treat prior to the meeting Richard McDougall and Jim Mauro, Sun performance gods, talked about the new book and the long journey to writting it. Interesting tidbit... the girl with her hand in the Niagara is ...

Sun’s Q2 Galaxy Rollout

Posted on July 26, 2006

I sort of dropped the ball on coverage of the recent Network Computing rollout. I spent the morning in ER after Tamarah smooshed her finger and her fingernail kept the wound from healing. It hurt like crazy and she didn't sleep all night but Tuesday morning we got her all fixed up and she was feeling better by that afternoon. I think we've all smashed our fingers at some point and know how much that sucks. I was bummed to miss the event ...

A Visit to BlueArc

Posted on July 25, 2006

Welcome to the 3rd age of Network Storage. NAS really got its start with Sun in 1984 when they introduced NFS. In this first era servers with large ammounts of disk acted as NFS servers. In 1992 NetApp showed the world was enterprise grade NAS was really about and has continued to be at the forefront of enterprise class NAS to this day. But in 1998 BlueArc was founded to push the limits of what we expect from NAS in the one place its ...

In case you've missed the blog entry or mail on OS-Discuss, the July meeting of the Silicon Valley OpenSolaris Users Group (SVOSUG) has been moved from Thursday to Tuesday... as in, like, today. We'll be having a very exciting night indeed, with a presentation from Tim Marshland, Sun Fellow, about Xen, and special guest stars Jim Mauro and Richard McDougall of Solaris Internals. Personally, I'm planning to hit Digital Guru on my way down ...

California Heat Wave and Comcast Outages

Posted on July 24, 2006

California is know as a sunny and warm place, but "warm" isn't as correct as "temporate". Its almost always "just right"(tm) and we love it. Temps in the Bay Area this weekend have reached up into the 100's, something we usually only see in the inland parts of the state that aren't effected by the cooling forces of the Pacific breeze. Friday night Tamarah and I were so desprate to get away from the heat that we took a drive out to Half Moon ...
