Mystery Events Gone By

Posted on July 28, 2006

Just found this on Flikr: An anniversary dinner for OpenSolaris at Rubicon. Any chance someone blogged about this? If you went, let us know how it was. This is the first I've heard of it.

Friday Diversions: Kool Kit

Posted on July 28, 2006

I. Need. This. Shirt. I hadn't seen this before. Classic. Joyent has several classic shirts, including a "MARS" shirt to combat LAMP: MySQL + Apache + Rails + Solaris... of course, I take exception to using MySQL over the vastly superior PostgreSQL, but no ones perfect. Viva Joyent FYI, since this is likely my last blog entry of the day.... I'll be gone all next week doing some much needed camping, reading Solaris Internals ...

SVOSUG Tonight!

Posted on July 25, 2006

In case you've missed the blog entry or mail on OS-Discuss, the July meeting of the Silicon Valley OpenSolaris Users Group (SVOSUG) has been moved from Thursday to Tuesday... as in, like, today. We'll be having a very exciting night indeed, with a presentation from Tim Marshland, Sun Fellow, about Xen, and special guest stars Jim Mauro and Richard McDougall of Solaris Internals. I think I'm in love. Thumper saves me from myself actually. I recently requested a quote on a Rackable storage box: Suprisingly, Rackable isn't as cheap as it would seem, and in fact Thumper may come in lower in cost than what Rackable can offer, with a lot more capability. As a storage guy, Jonathan is right on target with his latest blog entry. In fact... I have a confession to make. I've felt like a real looser for ...

Its happened... as seen in the Monday ON drop, the Solaris iSCSI Target has been integrated. Download the code here. I've been hacking around with the iSCSI Target as long as I've been able to get my grubby hands on it and find it really exciting. Solaris is now in the iSCSI drivers seat, with its own initiator and target implementation. I big round of applause goes to Mr. Richard McNeal, at Sun, or as he might be better called: ...

I've gotten way behind on posting pictures. I finally caught up to date and figured, even as late as it is, I'd share some of them... OpenSolaris@JavaOne The registration area of JavaOne (above). All the signage was in XML tags which I thought was kool. Some of the crowds at JavaOne. The place was packed! The OpenSolaris booth on the JavaOne Expo Floor before the flood gates opened. Mike Kupfer mans the post ready and waiting. ...

This Thursday evening, in Santa Clara, the OpenSolaris Users Group will host a presentation by Josh Berkus, PostgreSQL Core Team Member and closest thing PostgreSQL has to "the man"(tm). I'm also pleased to report that some how Alan has put together a call-in number for the meeting! If you want to call in and listen to the ...

Given that today is our birthday, it seems like a good time to give a little "whats what" review for those who might be new. So lets look at some various areas of OpenSolaris. Get the Code You can view the code online via OpenGrok (our source browser), you can download a buildable tarball of the code (compilers are available for free here), or checkout the code via the Genunix Subversion Repository.
