The State of the 2.5″ SAS Market

Posted on September 27, 2007

UPDATE: This blog entry discusses 2.5 inch SAS drives, NOT 3.5". Yes, 300GB 3.5" SAS disks are available, but in this entry we are solely concerned with 2.5" drives compatible with Sun Fire Galaxy Servers and other 2.5" based servers. Please don't mail me telling me that 300GB SAS Drives exist, look close, they are all 3.5" drives which I do not discuss here. In my last post regarding the new Intel based Sun Fire systems (X4150 ...

Sun Rolls Out Galaxy 2

Posted on September 26, 2007

As I'm sure most of you have seen by now, Sun has introduced 2 new systems to the X86 lineup: the X4150 and X4450. These systems are exciting for 3 very big reasons: These systems represent the first in the second generation of Galaxy. Remember, the M2 versions of the first Galaxy lineup were "product refreshes". These are all new. These systems represent the first fruits of the Intel partnership. The fact that Sun's systems archit...

s/SUNW/JAVA/

Posted on August 24, 2007

Most people have no doubt heard by now that Sun's stock ticker, SUNW (Stanford University Network Workstation), will be changed to JAVA, on the NASDAQ market. Will such a simple change help change the market opinion of the stock? I dunno, it might. I admit that it seems a bit desprate... but then, I'll admit that I have enough confidence in the move that I bought 200 more shares just in case. (Funny enough, I bought 200 shares of SUNW last ...

JRuby and Joyent Accelerators

Posted on May 27, 2007

I don't pimp Joyent products much, but I'll do so for this one. In our new Joyent Accelerators JRuby is pre-installed and ready to run out of the box. Joyent is a key player in the Ruby on Rails world, hosting some of the biggest (Twitter) and best (Ebible) Rails sites on the net. I'm glad to say that we're the first hosting company to get behind and seriously advocate JRuby for production use. Getting started is easy. In our Accele...

This is a followup to my previous post: Getting Fed Up With Sun: Can't Get Systems, Breaking Existing Ones. I'm going to break things down area by area, given that I hit a lot in that one post. Sun Fire X4200 M2: Changes And What You Should Know. At Joyent we build out entirely on Sun X4100 Dual Proc, Dual Core, 2.4Ghz systems with 16GB of RAM for almost all of our products and solutions. Its a server that we know well and really love. ...

I'm sooooooooooo tired of making excuses for Sun. I just got two X4200 M2's, not because I want them but because Sun can't get Joyent X4100's. Why Sun can't produce systems to meet customer demand constantly amazes me! There aren't many people inside or outside of Sun who evangelize the company as much as I do, but I'm tired of getting people fired up about systems and then hearing they can't get systems! Not only can't Sun produce ...

Sun & Intel: Digesting the News

Posted on January 22, 2007

So after letting the news sink in a bit I can be a little more focused. There are a lot of angles, so lets take 'em one by one. From the un-involved Shareholder standpoint this is a good thing. It means that Sun can branch out to a wider audience, isn't reliant on a single vendor for its X86 offerings, and is on even footing with other systems companies that are offering both Intel and AMD. Intel is a strong company and with the help ...

Sun and Intel: WTF!?!

Posted on January 22, 2007

I'm waiting for the webcast to really comment, but I'll give you my immediate knee-jerk reaction just for the record: WHAT. THE. FUCK. Talk about a slap in the face to AMD. I'm deeply disappointed.

Ruby SVN on Solaris

Posted on December 24, 2006

Some very kool news found a Ruby-lang.org. The new machine for svn.ruby-lang.org is provided by Sun Microsystems. We are using Solaris 10 on the new machine, and it works pretty well. At Joyent we've got hundreds of Rail's sites on OpenSolaris and we're absolutely certain that there is no better platform for Rails deployment. Ruby and Sun are definately becoming an item.
