Spoofing an OpenSolaris X86 hostid

Posted on May 22, 2010

hostid's on SPARC are handy things because through the PROM they are tied directly to the hardware. On Solaris X86, not so much. They are "soft hostids", software emulated and essentially randomly generated. Because of this fact, it is easy for an upgrade or accidental deletion to wipe out the hostid and potentially cause you problems. This post applies only to Nevada based installs post-snv_100. Or, more specifically, following the ...

The Case for IPS

Posted on May 19, 2010

On the list of those who hate IPS, I am the first. Even so, it is a very long list, and one that will grow longer and longer as it ceases to effect hobbiest and early adopters and becomes a reality in a proper Solaris GA release. While IPS has been around for some time now, only recently did I actually fully understand its purpose. In meeting with an engineer at Sun (whom I shall not name, but not directly involved with IPS) I started ...

iPad Review

Posted on April 4, 2010

DISCLAIMER: I say "iPhone" when I technically should say "iPod Touch". iPad has no mic and no phone. But, I say iPhone because thats the device most of us have and use for real applications. You know what I mean. One of the perks of working for a jazzy startup like Joyent who's had a good year: free iPad's for all. Our Christmas bonus from Joyent. w00t. So I pre-ordered mine and got it today, as promised by Apple. So, lets get ...

Solaris No Longer Free

Posted on March 28, 2010

Hot on the heals of Oracle's revamp of Solaris support, the licensing agreement for free downloads of Solaris 10 have changed. Infoworld broke the news on Friday. Here is the bit in question. Notice this paragraph in the Licensing Agreement: "Obtaining an Entitlement Document is simple. On the Solaris 10 Get It page, select the platform and format you desire from the drop-down menus, and then click the Download Solaris 10 button. ...

How Oracle Wants It

Posted on March 26, 2010

We're getting more of a taste as to the "new reality". Most of the news is of the "Surprised, but knew this was coming" variety. Motley Fool has a good write-up about the Oracle earnings announcement and how Sun's impacting the bottom line as well as changes coming. Some of the include getting rid of all unprofitable resale deals, such as Veritas and Hitachi products. CIO Mag dips into the new "All or Nothing" support model being ...

SysAdmin’s Get It Done

Posted on February 22, 2010

I'm not a huge fan of XKCD, but this is classic: BTW, if you don't play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (1 or 2), you should start. Amazing game. Props to my fellow snipers.

Phoronix has quickly risen as my favorite review site (along with Anandtech). They focus more on the *NIX world than other sites and have set the bar for a benchmark review site. In particular thanks to the Phoronix Test Suite, a venerable suite of benchmarks beautifully weaved together. Did I mention they like OpenSolaris? That helps too. :) They recently uploaded a presentation by site founder Michael Larabel entitled: The Five ...
