Blackbox is Real

Posted on October 17, 2006

After I learned of Project Blackbox I got excited... real excited. Anyone who has been around Sun in the Bay Area will recognize in the video the building behind it: the Executive Briefing Center on the Menlo Park Campus. I live across the bridge so I kicked my Volvo S70 T5's turbo into action and flew across the bridge. And I found what I sought.... It is really real. On the net the thing looks like a gag... a complex and complete ...

Things are changing at Sun and the future is looking bright as Sun starts to put its engineering muscle behind storage, an area of the business that was more about partnerships and rebadging than engineering brainpower. That's changing though, largely because of ZFS and that only makes it more interesting to see what I ran across today... Jeff Bonwick, Sun distinguished engineer and chief architect of ZFS, is speaking at 2006 Storage Develo...

Sun Cluster 3.2 Enters Beta

Posted on July 27, 2006

Sun Cluster 3.2 has finally entered beta! I'm not sure that I'm allowed to publicize the feature set but its looking really exciting. I'm furthermore excited to say that the Sun Cluster team has allowed me to invite people into the beta! Now, to be clear I can't authorize people, only invite which means that I push your name along to the fellow that will give you the thumbs up or down. But, what this means is that if you are a Sun ...

SRSS In a Zone

Posted on July 27, 2006

Several of us were talking in #opensolaris tonight and couldn't be sure whether or not you could install the Sun Ray Server Software 3.1 in a non-global zone. So I figured I'd try it: ... checkinstall[SUNWuti]: installation not permitted in local zone Installation of was suspended (administration). No changes were made to the system. utinstall: fatal, SRSS installer installation failed So... no, without hacking on this thing ...

Sun is providing early access to Sun Ray Software 4 Update 1 - Early Access Release. On a sad note, its only available for Linux (RHEL and SUSE). Based on the notices it would appear that most if not all the improvements for Update 1 are specifically for Linux and thus why Solaris isn't included in the EA release. Just a reminder for those of you as forgetful as I am, "Sun Ray Software 4" is in fact (currently) Sun Ray Server Software ...

Sun’s Q2 Galaxy Rollout

Posted on July 26, 2006

I sort of dropped the ball on coverage of the recent Network Computing rollout. I spent the morning in ER after Tamarah smooshed her finger and her fingernail kept the wound from healing. It hurt like crazy and she didn't sleep all night but Tuesday morning we got her all fixed up and she was feeling better by that afternoon. I think we've all smashed our fingers at some point and know how much that sucks. I was bummed to miss the event ...
