Conference Season is Upon Us
Posted on March 26, 2007
Its that time of year, conference season is open. As usual I’ll do my best to be at any major Bay Area tech expo’s where OpenSolaris can peek in its head. So far on the lineup is JavaOne running May 8-11 at Moscone, the MySQL Conference & Expo running April 23-26 in Santa Clara, and likely but as of yet unconfirmed LinuxWorld SF running Aug 6-9 at Moscone.
I encourage everyone to come out for JavaOne. Last year I had a real blast at the show. There was a lot of optimism and excitement and it was just a lot of fun to be in an energetic environment like that. This year there will be 4 OpenSolaris presentations, one of which I’ll be giving. The talks will be an introduction to OpenSolaris (thats me), OpenGrok, VMWare (guest presentation), and Dtrace. Joyent is also planning to be on hand for the show so I’ll be doing double duty as both a Joyent representative showing what we can bring to the party as well as an independent community member, which I think is ideal and covers both the enterprise adoption needs as well as the personal development needs.
Last year the MySQL Conference was really slow, but I’m hoping for a pickup this year, and since I’ve left the Oracle world for MySQL as used by many of Joyent’s hot Web 2.0 companies (including Twitter) I’ll have a lot more to bring to the event and talk about.
The one show that I was really looking forward to that I’m not attending is RailsConf 2007 running May 17-20 in Portland. I was all hyped up about going, I’ve even had a RailsConf banner on my blog for months, but alas I got the thumbs down and unless Sun or someone gets me travel and tickets I’m not attending… oh well. On a similar note, OSCon is completely undecided. Sun may decide to send a contingent to the event and if so I might get approved for travel and registration, but so far I’ve not really explored the issue.
Start updating your planners and scheduling in the events. Last year at JavaOne the MythBusters were on hand, which was enough reason to go alone, so don’t miss out and be ready to have some fun.
