Sun continues its crusade to kill itself....

You need to read this: An Open Letter to the OpenDS Community and to Sun Microsystems. OpenOffice has been ripped apart, now OpenDS, who knows what else is happening in other open source projects that Sun's involved in.

This kills me. I love Sun Microsystems and I'm just sitting here watching it rip itself apart piece by piece. Who is in control? Why has Sun continued to RIF many of its most valuable employees without having a clue. Someone posted in the comments the old and sad phrase: "Too Many Chiefs, Not Enough Indians." Its true, everyone knows it, every has known it for years and years and you don't have to be an employee to see and feel it effecting end customers.

Here is another old and tired phrase thats sadly applicable: STOP THE INSANITY!!!!!!!!

I an perhaps the most involved and long running member of the OpenSolaris project. I love Solaris, OpenSolaris, and Sun Microsystems.... but all of us involved must tread very carefully with wisdom, clarity, and a good measure of faith and hope.

In all fairness I believe that at the top Sun has truly changes it’s colors, it wants to be an Open Source company and participate in open communities. However cultural change takes time, it can take decades to change the culture of a company. Let’s just hope more in the “middle management” rank begin to join the clue train…

I’ve been investigating. There’s an HR dimension that I can’t discuss in public, but the substantive issue for the FOSS community is unrelated to the reduction-in-force layoff the employees in question were unfortunately subjected to.

So far I have found that the substantive issue seems to be about the fact a unilateral change of the governance was made¹ by Sun employees, without involving either the community or Sun management. All Sun’s representative did was ask for that unauthorised change to be reverted. We might argue over the actual governance later, but the issue now is that the change was made. It was wrong for it to be made without consultation, and Sun was in my view right to ask for it to be reverted (that’s all that has happened BTW²).

It’s good to side with the underdog (that’s where I always start from in my investigations) but in this case a former employee with a grudge is making things look as bleak as possible.

Simon, I was the previous OpenDS community leader. You should know that this change was not done unilaterally nor was it unauthorized. I find it remarkable that those who had little interest in this project over the past 2 years have suddenly become experts on OpenDS and the overarching Identity Management community. I am not privy to the misbehavior alleged by Neil, but I certainly know the history of OpenDS and its governance. I respect Sun and the vision set forth by Jonathan, but your facts are wrong and bashing the previous leadership is no way to set the record straight.

I would especially welcome you showing me with names and data points exactly why my facts are wrong. It would be better to do that via e-mail, at least unless and until we’re unable to agree.

Right now it still looks from the data-points I have been able to gather that management approval beyond the level of the people RIFed was not obtained before Sun was written out of the governance, and that the request to revert to the unaltered version was reasonable. If you have data, please write in confidence to ombudsman (at) sun.com.

And it escapes me why you’d find it remarkable I take an interest when Neil launches such an attack against Sun. I’m here to fix things like this since “open letters” and debate-via-the-media rarely help much.
