The New Face of Systems Administration

28 Nov '06 - 06:13 by benr

It occurs to me that this guy has become the new face of system administration:

Splunk has splattered this guys face everywhere it seems. And why not? He's a big lovable guy. Don't you just wanna hug him? So is this the new image of SA's? Less BOFH and more... I dunno, whatever he is. The natural upshot is that the more comfortable they feel the more likely they'll actually listen to what you tell them... one can hope anyway.

I for one welcome our new smiling overlord.

I certainly hope this is not the new face of System Administration. I hope the new face of System Administration is one of a professional (see [[http://lopsa.org/]]), one that understands business and technology and can exist equally well in either environment. I hope the new face of System Administration is one who follows the System Administration Code of Ethics at [[http://lopsa.org/CodeOfEthics]] and looks less like an idiot.

Stephen Potter (Email) (URL) - 29 November '06 - 15:48

Actually, this new face of System Administration DOES understand business and technology and can exist equally well in either environment. The above model is none other than my fiancee and he has 15+ years of Sys Admin expertise under his belt and happens to be an invaluable employee of Splunk. He volunteered to be in their ads and has taken a lot of flack for it from guys like you. You might want to spend more time working on your own Sys Admin tasks and less time judging other people based on your idiotic projections, Mr. Bradford.

Scratch that – unlike my brilliant fiancee, I am a non-geek and didn’t realize that the offensive posting was made by Mr. Potter, not Mr. Bradford.

Mr. Bradford – you rock.

Mr. Potter – you suck.

Things to do list:

1.) Cancel Gym Membership
2.) Find Wholesale Twinkies in Google.
3.) Join Glee Club.

Why does it have to be a new face?
Why can’t it be simply the “new philosophy”?

Managed Dedicated Servers @ Dataracks (Email) (URL) - 29 November '06 - 22:51

He scares me.

Managed Dedicated Servers @ Dataracks (Email) (URL) - 29 November '06 - 22:52

I love it… this one man has been now elevated from Sysadmin Icon to a whole new philosophy! Sweet. ;)

Sandi: I salute you!

From one ”(soon to be)married to a geek” woman to another, well done standing up for your man :) That’s true love, my friends.

“I hope the new face of System Administration is one who follows the System Administration Code of Ethics at ].”

Thank you. I’ve not had a laugh like that in a long, long time. It’s not enough that I’ve had 26 hour long spells in a refrigerated data center in Santa Clara, while watching the rise and fall of the dot-com boom, but now I have some bozo in Texas with enough spare time to crap out some sort of Code Of Ethics like the job has some huge moral aspect to it.

Great, you’re a professional. So what? Who cares?

-tcannon, CCIE, CCNP, CCDP, SCNA, SCSA, FNCNE, CCNA, CCDA, CISSP and I still wear flip flops to work.

Why’d ya save the most important part till the end? :D

But Potter has a point: Sysadmin work does come with moral aspects. Confidentiality is one of the largest ones at that. Another one would be not screwing over your employer for own benefit (hello, banking environment?). Stuff like that.

While I agree that LOPSA takes things a little too far, they do make some good points. The only thing I do not agree with is the bit about not getting your feelings and beliefs mixed up in your work. How is that even remotely possible? :D

And as far as I’m concerned there’s no “face of Sysadmining”; that’s just marketing. Sysadmining is made by us all and thus the community is the face.

who cares? stop worrying about your corporate identity and start working for yourselves.

crybaby (Email) - 01 December '06 - 04:32

So, I’ve dug through all of the comments and make a few conclusions. The new face of sysadmins bothers me because:
(1) he is better looking that me
(2) he is probably better at the job than I am
(3) he probably gives a rats ass about his job
(4) and he has a girl

This is a problem to me because as a sysadmin myself, I feel I should look the part. Instead I’m thin and am what females generally say is “hot”. I’ve been working diligently the last two weeks trying to fatten myself up yet keep failing. The second problem is the fact that I am an admin in a hospital and my boss consistently insists on requiring me to use Windows XP as a logical solution. I disagree and feel that my Solaris and GNU/Linux training is going to waste. Thus I could care less about anything to do with the job besides the money and the nifty Pocket PC 6700 phone he bought me. The last annoyance I find is that although women are easy to come across. They all seem to want nothing more than to party and jump in bed. I’m looking to settle down and marry. Mr. Admin man from the pictures….. You are a legend and I despise yet seem to find myself strangley envious of you…... [[http://www.myspace.com/noframe]]

Papa Konnichiwa,

My employer agreed to buy any of the SysAdmin contest winners a pizza this year.

So, if you find yourself a winner or runner-up next year, I’m sure they would be willing to extend the same courtesy to you and assist you in your efforts to, um, grow professionally.
