ZFS in the Trenches: Presentation from OpenSolaris Storage Summit

And so ends another OpenSolaris Storage Summit. Turnout was great and despite the fact that it was strategically attached to the FAST conference, I was shocked how many people flew in from around the world specifically for this one day event. A big thanks to all who attended.

I presented a lightening fast "ZFS in the Trenches" talk, which is guaranteed to be the most indepth ZFS talk you've ever heard in 30 minutes. When I gave the talk it seemed like I was flying so fast that it was incomprehensible but in review it came off pretty well.

Great talk, enjoyed it live very much … could have done with it being stretched across two sessions ;-)

BTW, watching it yesterday there was a reference you made to two tools about midway thru, that when we checked the PDF, we found you’d revised the slidedeck. Any chance of the updated slide(s) or a pointer … I thought it was just me, but someone else on the remote feed caught the ref as well ;-)

I’ll search for the timecode, but the current video is too poor quality to lift it from the video!

OK, squinting at the video … 02:36:29 in, I think the slide reads “biodone” at the tail of a line, if so I guess it would be bdev_strategy and biodone which you are referring to, but neither are in the slidedeck on the Summit site.

BTW, its was Max Bruning and myself that were interested …

Yup, you got it… bdev-strategy and biodone. This lets you better watch the time it takes to push IO into the driver/device and best represents a general view of the physical layer.

Nice presentation – hopefully I’ll carve out sometime to watch the video over the next day or two. A few quick questions – any thoughts on iozone vs filebench as a benchmarking tool and ZFS vs VxFS for DB performance?
