HP Endorses Solaris; Kinda Sorta

There was good news for Solaris today and I think a great breakthrough in terms of acceptance thanks to an announcement from HP to formally support Solaris on HP X86 systems. The Register reported this today and rightly named the article: “HP smacks Sun with Solaris stick”. Read the HP Press Release. Here are some choice lines:

  • HP is making it easier for dissatisfied Sun Microsystems server customers to migrate to higher performing, more affordable x86-based HP ProLiant platforms.
  • HP shipped more than a half million more x86-based servers worldwide than Sun in the third quarter of 2006. In the same period, HP grew its shipments year-over-year by almost two times the entire number of platforms Sun shipped.
  • Since 2004, HP has generated more than $1 billion in revenues from moving Sun customers to HP servers.

Well this is still rather nice. HP also said: “Tru64 and OpenVMS, those are unique systems with their own niche and we will support them and further develop them” well that hasn’t happened.

But HP makes great X86 hardware and I think it’s good to have HP back Solaris.
Fun to read that HPUX-11i is for demanding environment, I know for a fact that Solaris scale better than HPUX-11i, Solaris v.s. Tru64+TruCluster now that would’ve been a nice challenge. HP-UX is a relic with it’s kernel relinking and reboots. *that’s my punch*

From painful experience I can honestly say Sun’s support is way better than HP’s. HP is, well, rather useless and it isn’t just a unix admin saying it. Our Windows group despises HP support more than we do because they have to deal with them more often.

  3. Now that’s fun… I’d rather not get punched in the face by HP. Let’s all leave the woodwork to purchase an overpriced Itanic or PA-RISC system shall we… not! Most companies and humans never founded on their cruft anyways, so they can just die or continue to die. Not forgeting that IBM is milking a cheap homebrew system, or that IBM isn’t investing a dime in AIX either. The big players are killing theirselves, and it’s obvious that Sun will be the last after IBM, HP, and SGI finish playing russian roulette.

HP-UX’s notoriously evil and annoying kernel interfaces, lack of innovation and inability to graft any much needed features into it continue to derail the steam it may have once had when put side by side with Solaris just a decade ago. Solaris is fast outpacing development inroads that the big players may once had over open-source from-the-start operating systems. Thanks to OpenSolaris and Sun’s commitment, I think that the innovation is almost on par of what the open systems have enjoyed for years now.

Let them embrace and run away like chickens with no head, I personally don’t invest in any hardware or software vendor which dangles goodies in front of you and makes you uncertain about the time to come. I had it with SGI when they all of a sudden said they were going with a cheaply crafted OS. (Linux of course… it’ll cure cancer and solve crime and make coffee… yeah right!) Most people can’t afford HP-UX or IRIX support anyways, so I’ll just run my last IRIX box as long as possible, and continue to recommend migration over to Solaris and FreeBSD for anyone that dares to even mention HP or their three dead and dying systems. I personally find IRIX a stable and well crafted system, but there was no portability, which is why SGI just ran off into the hills. It’s dead and dying, and unless the kernel in its entirety was opened, the loyal base of open-source porters cannot save or extend it past the due to die date of 2013. So be it, Sun’s doing well with their stocks and continues to offer SPARC and unmatched support, so let those who are destined to die, just die… we can put them out (Could be like a fire, but maybe more like nuclear winter) and pull out all those who get laid flat by their runaway pick-a-part degrading monster treadmill.
