You’ll recall my “unofficial” Blastwave update in August. The separation of Phil and Dennis seems to be solidifying a bit. The CSW Project (Phil and co.) are now up and running at OpenCSW.org. Minus the blastwave name and CSS, its more or less the same site and content you had/have at blastwave.org.
OpenCSW.org includes a History page, which tells the CSW side of the breakup, minus the unverified assertions by Dennis Clarke that Phil Brown tried to setup with a company in Europe. To this end, Dennis has, naturally, written a response: A simple response to the OpenCSW crew, a blog entry that is simply a re-post of a CSW Maintainers list thread.
If you are interested in the unfolding soap opera, read and enjoy. If you simply enjoy using CSW/Blastwave software, nothing has yet changed sufficient to cause any reason to notice.
Please note, if you are new to this saga and read through the links above please bear in mind why Solaris 8 support is such a big issue. See, most of the existing Solaris install base is still running Solaris 8 on SPARC, furthermore, because of Solaris binary compatability, anything built on Solaris 8 (Solaris 2.6 for that matter) will run on Solaris 9, Solaris 10, Nevada or OpenSolaris… the only downside is that building software on Solaris 8, due to its age, can be a big more painful than on Solaris 10. The argument then falls into two camps: deal with the pain and be available to more users, or dump older releases to make builds easier and thus hope to attract new maintainers. In a nutshell anyway. Enjoy.
It is both sad and frustrating to watch something that has become such an active community and staple of software for so many to fall apart. I have watched from the sidelines as flaming emails are tossed back and forth in various newsgroups and mailing lists. I would like to have seen some of the choices for reorganization thrown out earlier to the community and maintainers. These people are the core and backbone of open projects. I am not advocating a complete democracy, however community feedback should still be an integral process for decisions made by project leaders. I have no doubt that both projects will continue on, but at the cost of causing confusion and alienation to the community.
I’ll stick with the Blastwave guys because it is a much more serious process. I could care less about the flames and I have only ever seen *flames* from the other guys anyways .. name calling and acting like children .. and nothing else. In fact .. they still have the GPG key they stole from Blastwave on their web site. I just want a software thing that works and will be here in two years .. so I’ll stick with the business based org every time. Just like Fedora and OpenSolaris .. it has stability.

I’ve followed the CSW/Blastwave unfold for many years. I will write this:
Solaris 8 is ANCIENT. It’s hard to get him running on i86pc platform hardware, as the support for the i86pc platform in Solaris 8 is miserable. It’s time to ditch that jig and move on. 21st century and all that.
CSW just “didn’t get it” when it came to certain things, like being System V compliant, a really big minus in the ‘clean engineering with understanding’ book. And Phil used to make unreasonable demands on would-be maintainers, like porting experience (just because someone knows how to package, doesn’t mean they’re capable of bringing over GNU/Linux GCC-only garbage into the cleanroom environment of Sun Studio and Solaris).
DISCLAIMER:
I maintain my own, private software stack with the software equivalent to that of both CSW and Blastwave, so I’m not cheering for one or the other, merely stating the state of affairs.
