Fishworks Launches in Las Vegas

I was honored to be part of the historic FISHworks, now combined with the “Amber Road” hardware to become officially known as Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems. At the last minute on Friday, Sun PR apparently needed an extra customer walk-on and my friend Jason William’s from Digitar put in a good word for me… Monday morning I was in Vagas.

If you didn’t see the launch, have a look here. My walk on is 6 minutes into Chapter 4.

Having been running FISHworks for almost 2 years, I’m absolutely ecstatic about this release. Please download the Sun Unified Storage Simulator, which is FISHworks in a can… a VMware image for PC and Mac (apparently Mr. Marsland didn’t convince them to use VirtualBox).

I’m going to write about FW a lot more in the next couple days, but I want to make it very clear that while Analytics is sexxy and gets a lot of attention, this is a world class storage system that will rival your existing storage solutions both in terms of performance and ease-of-use, not to mention functionality. Watch the launch videos for an over-view and then start playing with the Sim.

Fishworks looks pretty cool, any idea if we’ll be able to download the software at some point and run it on top of a standard solaris install? I have a number of X4500s serving up iSCSI, NFS and CIFS and would love to install the Fishworks software on them.

    It is doubtful.
The software/analytics run ~ $15-20K, considering the markup.
The software is really nice though. They did a very nice job.

The only downside I see is that the 7110 and 7210 aren’t expandable yet.

Otherwise it is a very nice first Hybrid Storage product.

    Kudos to the team

    What? No utili-kilt?

So Ben, do you know if there is anything coming out of this FISHworks project that will be be available to geeks running zfs on their home fileserver?

I have close to a 1/4 PB of Thumpers in an academic setting. I was told that there were no plans for unbundling fishworks from the amber road appliances and that support for X4500′s was not there and there were no plans for it to be there.
In sum, for us thumper adopters, we have to look elsewhere for our storage software solutions.

One of the key features of Fishworks is the way Solid State Drives are implemented to deliver IOP’s for read and/or writes and the subsequent
ability to leverage SATA drives. This combination changes the economics and the ability to point ZFS caches (the ZIL for writes and the L2ARC for reads) delivers record setting capbility for throughput and lower over all costs because you don’t need to buy dozens of spindles to hit hit IOP rates.

These features are in the OpenSolaris (build 88 or higher as I recall).
Brendan Gregg of the Fisworks team coded the L2ARC code according to his blog.

So, a lot of Fishworks benefit is available for us to use with any thing that can run OpenSolaris.

The Fishworks BUI is a storage managers dream… of course, I’m a server guy and it looks like the best browser adaption of Dtrace output I’ve ever seen. That fact that it was coded by 2 or the three Dtrace inventors (as I recall) Brian, Mike and Adam is a key to the mastery of that observability tool.

I’m ready to say goodbye to firmware (or PC OS embedded) RAID controllers.

Now Sun just needs to apply the same thinking to IP routing and they’ll should be able to increase their take of Server, Storage and Network products.

DISCLAIMER: I am an engineer with a Sun Reseller and saw Ben in person at the announcement event. Fishworks gave me the same buzz that Java did back in 1995. It’s a game changing project.

  7. metacomment: i keep your blog open in a tab in FF3 pretty much all the time (in other words, i’m a fan). however, this current entry is proving a bit of an annoyance, because the video starts up automatically each time i re-open FF. so i have this speech start up in the background every time, and until i’ve satisfied the dozen or so htauth dialogs that pop up for other work-related tabs i keep open….well, you can see my “issue”. it’s minor, but i wonder if the video can be configured not to autoplay?

  8. Didn’t realize you were onstage for the Fishworks launch, Ben. V. cool. Just watched it, and you were direct and honest as always. Hope you enjoyed it! –Claire G.
