AMD released their new roadmap today. Several references to the Barcelona delays (AMD Quad Core, delays which have impacted Sun’s release schedule) are scattered throughout and positioned as a major setback for AMD to overcome in the next several years. Whether you follow the news or not its obvious to anyone in or around IT that AMD has given up a tremendous lead over Intel in the last 2 years and Intel is continuing to pummel ‘em. Lets hope that AMD can really pull it together and stay in the game.
I’ve been really sad to see a one-sided processor market recently. However, it doesn’t look like AMD is making any leaps forward just yet.
The two places where AMD seems to still have some lead is in the chipset and in power consumption, but they still have to chase raw performance to stay in the game.
Drew, I am not sure, what kind of Chipsets you mean? In the server area as well as Notebooks – and most likely most Desktops Intel offer very complete solutions, whereas AMD often relies on integrators, thirdparty (vendors for motherboards).
chipsets for amd are crap, mostly the feature only poor network controllers and on laptop, they seem to suck even more.
amd should have never given up making chipsets!
