Most people have no doubt heard by now that Sun’s stock ticker, SUNW (Stanford University Network Workstation), will be changed to JAVA, on the NASDAQ market. Will such a simple change help change the market opinion of the stock? I dunno, it might. I admit that it seems a bit desprate… but then, I’ll admit that I have enough confidence in the move that I bought 200 more shares just in case. (Funny enough, I bought 200 shares of SUNW last night at market price, to be executed at market open this morning… the total buy price was, I kid you not, $999.99. A good sign? I hope so.)

The “W” was added to the desired NASDAQ symbol, “SUN” when Sun Oil wouldn’t go along. At the time it stood for ‘west’ to avoid the conflict. Yep, I was there.
I know what SUNW is, I can talk about it and google for it with no confusion as it clearly names Sun’s stock symbol. ‘JAVA’ is already a word with many associations and a good few google hits outside of the stock market?

Yeah, and not many good ones either. As one of my colleagues put it: “When i think of Sun, I think of lean and powerful. When I think of Java, I think of slow and crappy.”
The general consensus at work seems to be that this was a -stupid- move. Give me McNealy back…
