Why the world isn’t a better place

James Dickens recently posted a blog entry entitled Should this guy be canned?. The post points to Pradhap Devarajan’s blog, who, if you didn’t know, just so happens to be one of the guys behind the popular BeleniX Distribution of OpenSolaris.

Here’s what pisses me off… Pradhap created a little PERL script that gives you a more Linux like structure for the root user (home of /root, instead of Solaris standard /), makes a backup of your config, disables root login via telnet (which is default last I checked), and enables root login via ssh. Where do people get off giving him a hard time about providing this script? Both in the comments and in James’s blog Pradhap is being beat up about it and its publically suggested that because of it he should be fired.

Now, I’m sure some of you are thinking “d00d, chill out”, but this is the type of behaviour that keeps good people from doing good thing. If you don’t like the script, don’t run it, but don’t give him a ration of shit about it. There are a lot of people in this world that could provide good and helpful things but don’t because they are afraid of getting a lashing or looking stupid or something. Reactions to a simple script like this just re-enforce that “I’m glad I’m not blogging” fear people have.

How many people out there want to contribute code to projects or start their own projects but are afraid of getting laughed at or called names? Who wants that kind of abuse? The solution: don’t bother… don’t contribute.

And so, just a reminder to everyone… trash talking because something “isn’t the way it should be” does only 2 things: A) makes the person who was trying to help others feel like a schmuck, and B) makes you look like an idiot who’s just looking to thump his own chest. Live and let live. Contribute and collaborate and most importantly, remember that this is all about fun, first and foremost.

You say that both in comments and the blog itself he’s being beat up – my comment was certainly not to “beat up” pradhap, but rather defend his position and his work.

As you’ve said it’s becoming more and more common (or maybe I bacame more receptive to that over the years) that one gets beaten up for saying or doing something that’s not common or not in line with the OneTrue™ UNIX way of things. That said, I can understand jamesd’s POV too (think enterprise).

Anyway I think that It’s time (at least for me) to back-out from this discussion, because there’s no point in stirring it anymore.

Looks like a lot of emotions stirred up about that post.

I can’t and won’t write anything on behalf of others, but I can write on my own behalf:

times are bad. People are coming into IT trying to do UNIX work and just lacking the experience to do it. We should be teaching people how to do clean, scalable stuff with UNIX and give them a good solid foundation to actually understand it.
Nursing the Slashdot FUD with making Solaris emulate Linux-like behavior isn’t going to help people. If these people can be shown WHY things are done the way they are in UNIX, they will have a chance to understand.
This isn’t all empty phrases either. I can say with clean conscience that I’m trying to help by teaching people face to face to understand UNIX and give them a good foundation from the start. For crying out loud, they are picking up people from the street here who have installed Linux once at home and hiring them as Solaris admins! I’ve had guys in the meetings sneer at the mention of throwing GCC out of the window in favor of Sun Studio 11, all because they lack the experience and knowlegde to even understand why. And I’m just supposed to stand by… and do nothing?

  8. Philippe Plouffe says:

    James,

You’ll probably say you don’t care and still think you are right…but here is comes anyway…and all knows I’m not good at it:

It would be better, as you said it, “that YOU stand by.. and do nothing”.

You don’t help by bashing on others. There are ways to say things.

Let me put that in perspective:

You are physicaly bashing someone in the middle of the street because he didn’t cross at the intersection (it’s not safe ins’t and it’s a dam bad example), for all people to see.

    Now,

    - Does your customers read what happened ?
    - Does your wife ?
    - Does your friends ?
    - Does your kids ?
    - Does my kids ?
    - Does my customers ?
    - What people are thinking about Unix guys now and Opensolaris ?
    - Does the community is happy you mixed their image to this ?
    - What your kids thinks it’s good to do now in similar situation?

It’s not the message, it’s the way you used.

  9. ux-admin says:

    1. UX-admin != James.

    2. I will not stand by and do nothing when the Linux mindset starts affecting my projects, my team and my work directly.

  10. Shane Falco says:

From pradap’s blog, I see the ux-admin fanboy (I can understand why James and ux-admin are lumped together…I’ve actually thought they were the same person for months now) write:

“Writing of starting newbies on bad habits, why are you teaching them to use bash? You should be teaching newbies to use tcsh”

Roll my eyes, fall over, roll on the floor laughing, start choking, and then start rolling and laughing again. I wasn’t aware that “senior system engineers who have been working on cutting edge tech, developing new stuff you’ve obviously never even seen or heard of” still got into shell religious debates!

PS: ZSH already ended any such discussion years ago! ;)

  11. Albert says:

Ben, thanks for speaking out your mind on these seemingly “trivial” issues. We need more sensible and level headed people who are also true Unix hackers – like you in our community. Working with the opensolaris community has been “Real Fun” for a year now and I hope it continues to remain so …

  12. Narendra says:

The perception of security has dramatically changed over years.
Today source code is available for most of the things and people (even hackers) know how things work.
Inspite of this, things have been made more secure.

Some people are spitting fire on Pradhap for writing a script which migh help beginers in Solaris.
They are assuming that, if Pradhap hadn’t written this script and if he hadn’t made it public…….then Solaris would have remained more secure and people woudn’t have known it!!
I think, people who are arguing like this are still in the dark ages.

Disabling telnet or enabling root login is not witchcraft.
Everybody experienced in Unix know this.

And for a person still opening his eyes in Unix world, is not still concerned about security. He is just trying to move around and learn things. And if “moving around” itself becomes difficult for him, how can you expect him to love Unix?
So, Pradhap’s script will help those people a lot and I really feel proud that, he has made this script public.
If this script is given to a fresher, the chances of him remaining with the Unix world would have just doubled!

    Thanks Pradhap.

    Regards,
    Narendra
