Due to very recent changes in Solaris licensing, OpenSolaris has gained importance. Any Solaris installation now requires a (paid) licence ! There is indeed a 90-day trial period granted to evaluate the software.
Without a service contract upgrading between “named releases” (8, 9, 10, 11) requires to buy a new license. In the past the RTU obtained with a new system covered these upgrades.

Can someone point me to an official communication regarding the Solaris 10 licensing change, and does anyone know if this change retroactively affects Solaris 10 installations downloaded before the acquisition?

I have also just learnt that opensolaris does not have free updates – you have to use the dev/unstable build to get patches.
This seems like a massive turning point to me – the whole model of Solaris adoption is screwed now, people are going to head to linux in droves.
I love solaris but unless we are running it for software like oracle/sybase/etc I’m not going to be able to convice the boss to pay for it when linux is free.
