I am partly responsible. Sorry to everyone that the blog has been so quiet lately. Given that state of Solaris right now, its unclear what is dead and what is alive. It feels futile to blog about features that may never really be viable. Couple that with OpenSolaris which still hasn’t delivered and the fact that many of the features that need documenting are really pretty uninteresting to me (ie: IPS/AI).
The exodus still continues. Lots of engineers have left Sun and many more are considering leaving. I’m told by folks that its not a huge problem because while the big name guys are leaving, the real down in the trench do-ers are still there and working away. But it certainly is disheartening.
The most recent news out there was that Oracle yanked HP’s OEM License, so if you run Solaris on HP Prolient servers, your hosed. See? Not a lot of positive stuff for me to blog about.
Personally, I’ve been more interested recently with the growing ‘Devops’ movement and IT standards. I’ve spent a lot of time in ITILv3, ISO 20K/27K, CobiT 4.1, COSO, NIST SP800-53, etc, etc, etc. A whole new and interesting world to me because I came to it instead of a company hoisting it on me against my will.
I have several articles to get out for SearchDataCenter which I’ll plug here, and then will start rolling new content out here in a bit.

I’m sort of in the same boat regarding Novell. I’m moving live groupwise post offices and migrating other data away from our netware boxes over to suse Linux. That is a big deal if you’re in the “novell world”. As it is, I feel like I’m standing on a rickety platform holding all this cool stuff i want to talk about, but I’m also anticipating the entire thing is about to collapse. So what’s the point?

I believe a lot of people are hoping FreeBSD will someday turn into the enterprise OS and take his place where he rightly deserves to be, but the reality is, the FreeBSD community is small, and making FreeBSD an enterprise OS, for example by adding clustering, has never been a priority.
Let’s all hope that changes someday. Unfortunately, that day is not today.

oracle needs to get word out asap. waiting for the oracle world is to late. I hope that after the bigadmin move at least some clarity will be brought forwad.

@UX-admin: Oh yeah, I’ve spent time in CMMI-SVC. I don’t like it. CobiT feels really natural and structured without being constricting. ITIL is an excellent source of best practice which compliments everything. But CMMI feels really stogy and restrictive. I love the maturity and capability models it presents, which have basically been adopted everywhere, but as to the actual framework and process areas, its just constricting. Certainly a great reference, but CobiT kicks the crap out of CMMI.
I guess, to put it another way, CobiT feels like something that came from industry, CMMI feels very academic. I do fully realize that they can (and are) used together… but there is so much overlap I don’t see why I personally would desire to do so.
CobiT + ITIL + NIST SP800-53 feels like a really great way to head toward ISO20K and ISO27K in a sensible and entirely “do-able” way.
It is a shame for the entire developer community. If Solaris get less attention by these communities, it will drag innovation down including other OS. Let’s face it. They all copy each other at some level.
Not surprise after the acquisition. If Oracle do not act fast it will pay the bill later by having not attracting anyone to enhance its software suite.
Is the goal is to enhance Oracle Linux maturity and add features to the level of Solaris is. Maybe…
